The Center for Genomics of the Cell is funded by the Millennium Scientific Initiative and it is the successor of the Millennium Nucleus in Developmental Biology (2000-2006). Our goal is to perform basic research in molecular, cell and developmental biology of the highest standard, to train new scientists in these fields, to establish new technologies in Chile and to maintain strong international ties, especially within the Latin American region.
We carry out research using animal models (zebrafish, fruitfly, chicken and mouse) and we attempt to understand the genetic basis for developmental phenomena. We aim to understand how cells use the information encoded in the genome to acquire behaviors in the context of the developing animal. Specific topics include control of cell growth and shape, cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, signaling, and cell death. We also aspire to use the animal models in our labs as drug discovery tools and as environmental sensors. Technologies in use include advanced genomic analysis, transgenesis, stem cell culture, fluorescence and confocal microscopy and behavioral assays.

GRANTS!!!! Members of the CGC have been awarded the following grants: Alvaro Glavic. FONDECYT grant (2010-2014) Miguel Allende. CORFO-INNOVA grant (2010-2011) Carmen Gloria Feijóoo. Academic Insertion grant (2010-2012) PRIZES!!: Rosario Villegas (Allende Lab) has won the competition for best image presented at the Annual Chilean Society fro Cell Biology, Nov. 1-5 in Pucon. Katica Boric (Whitlock Lab) has won third prize in the same competition. These images can be seen here. These prizes follow the award for best image given last year to Consuelo Ibar (Glavic lab). Congratulations to both!! MORE PRIZES: Miguel Allende has obtained the distinction of "Best Undergraduate Teacher 2009" awarded by the Universidad de Chile. COURSE: Advanced Insect Developmental Genetics and Genomics. This international training course will take place from December 2 to 12, 2009. Applications are now open; please click here for more information. Carmen Gloria Feijóo (postdoc with M. Allende) has been awarded a FONDECYT grant for Initiation in Science as an independent researcher, project that will be carried out in Universidad Andrés Bello. Luis Milla has been awarded a Fondecyt Postdoctoral fellowship (2009-2011) to be carried out with Verónica Palma. Constanza Martínez (Grad Student with Verónica Palma) and Miguel Allende were interviewed on the program "Milenio" on Radio Universidad de Chile. The topic was stem cells and tissue regeneration. You can hear the entire program (in Spanish, second half hour) here. |
